About Louise

Louise Fowler Cornish coastal artist.png

Louise holds a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art. She lives in St Ives, Cornwall, and enjoys long dog walks on empty beaches. She finds great comfort in the solace of wild places.

She is continually inspired by the coastline of West Cornwall and its shifting moods. She is primarily drawn to portray the overwhelming atmospheric elements of light and sea, and her work explores the spiritual and intellectual significance of colour.

Not all who wander are lost. Louise’s work explores the themes of solitude, the self, and the nature of beingness. Cornwall is a place where the veil between myth and reality is drawn thin. Her paintings transcend the impact of change and modernity. She plays with myth and reality, then and now, and the power of nature. Louise’s work suggests the multi-layered relationship between surface and depth, focusing on that point where a fundamental and primordial pattern can begin to be glimpsed from both above and beneath. The self, time, and place come together in a vortex of light and sea.

Louise uses perspective to create an illusion of space and depth. However, her emphasis is on the act of painting: the character and texture of the brushwork, knifework, use of oils and cold wax. Her work is characterised by her use of bold, unrealistic colours - chosen not to depict life as it is, but rather, as it feels. She paints the essence of her subject as she, the artist, interprets it.
